Starting a GEO Business as a One-Person OPC: Realistic Startup Cost Calculation (With Complete Checklist)
A few days ago, I wrote an article titled "OPC (One Person Company) is Perfect for GEO Business". Unexpectedly, it received a great response and views keep rising. After publishing, I got many private messages from friends with the same key questions: Can one person really start a business with GEO? Is the OPC model reliable? How much startup capital is needed? Can I do it without hundreds of thousands of yuan?
These are very practical questions. In many people's minds, "starting a business" is always tied to high costs, large teams, and offices—as if it’s not entrepreneurship without heavy investment. But if you’ve been in the internet industry long enough, you’ll know the truth: many profitable small businesses started with just one or two people. Especially in service industries like bookkeeping and ad account opening, a small team runs perfectly well.
We’ve run our company for 10 years, made mistakes, and seen all kinds of entrepreneurial paths. In recent years, we’ve met many GEO entrepreneurs, most starting as one-person companies. Today, based on our real experience and observations, let’s calculate: How much does it cost to start a GEO business with the OPC model?
You’ll find the entry barrier for this industry is much lower than you think.
1. GEO Learning Cost: ¥0 – ¥10,000
This is everyone’s top concern. Many people think "GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)" is complex and requires tech or coding skills. But in reality, the technical barrier is not high.
GEO is essentially an experience + information gap industry. Its core skills focus on optimizing content structure, question design, knowledge systems, and information layout—such as structuring questions, organizing content logic, and making brands answer like experts. These skills are accessible; it just depends on whether you’ve entered the field and had guidance.
If you’re a fast learner, you can research independently. That’s how we started: with years of search marketing experience and massive testing, we became early GEO researchers in China. Now there are plenty of AI search and GEO resources online—you can figure it out with time.
But self-study has a big issue: time cost. It may take months or a year to master the logic, while internet opportunities don’t wait. Training helps you start quickly and save time. Current GEO training costs range from thousands to 10,000 yuan. Our core courses take just a few hours, as real skills come from practicing projects.
Summary: Learning costs range from ¥0 (full self-study) to ¥10,000 (high-quality training). Also, learn advertising laws to ensure compliance.
2. Company Registration Cost: ¥3,000 – ¥4,000/year
This is the first hurdle for many: Should you register a company? You can skip it if testing as a side hustle, but register it for long-term growth. The practical reason: corporate clients need invoices, and you’ll miss opportunities without a company.
Take Shanghai as an example: company registration is simple, with free registration in many areas. Most founders hire an agency to save time. Registration itself is nearly free, but a fixed cost comes after: bookkeeping. Companies need accounting, tax filing, and annual reports—hiring an agency is common. Market price: ¥1,200 – ¥6,000/year, mostly ¥3,000 – ¥4,000 for SMEs, about ¥200–300 monthly, affordable.
No worries about registered capital: under the subscription system, you can pay within 5 years and reduce capital later—consult an agency for details.
3. Bank Account Cost: ¥300/year
After registration, you need a corporate bank account. We recommend China Merchants Bank: its online banking is user-friendly like internet products. Many areas offer free account opening, with a monthly management fee of ~¥25, totaling ~¥300/year.
4. Printer & Basic Equipment: ¥500
No need for top-tier gear at the start. A basic black-and-white office printer (~¥500) fully meets a one-person company’s early needs. Upgrade later when monthly orders are stable.
5. Office Space Cost: ¥0 – ¥1,000/month
GEO is a content & online service—all you need is a computer and internet. Work from home for nearly ¥0 initially. A café works for a change of scenery. For formal meetings, a co-working desk costs ~¥500–1,500/month.
6. Official Website Cost: ¥0 – ¥30,000
A website is a display and customer acquisition channel. Skip it early if relying on connections. But if you prefer organic online traffic (like us), it’s essential. Start small: a simple corporate site costs ¥2,000–5,000. Upgrade later when business stabilizes.
7. AI Tools & Token Cost: Negligible
Many people panic about building their own AI systems. Early-stage entrepreneurship prioritizes getting clients first. Spending tens of thousands on tools before getting orders is irrational. Use existing AI tools—this cost is almost negligible at startup.
8. Total Startup Capital Calculation
Total cost breakdown:
-
Learning Fee: ¥0 – ¥10,000
-
Company Registration & Bookkeeping: ¥3,000 – ¥4,000/year
-
Bank Fees: ¥300/year
-
Equipment Cost: ¥500
-
Office Expenses: ¥0 – ¥1,000/month
-
Website Cost: ¥3,000 – ¥30,000
Conclusion:
¥10,000 is enough to start testing the business.
¥30,000 – ¥50,000 is more than sufficient for a formal, confident launch.
Many of you will realize entrepreneurship costs less than imagined. The real challenge isn’t money—it’s the courage to start.
9. Expand to Training & Consulting After Mastering the Business
Common industry growth path: Services → Consulting → Training. Once you have experience, cases, and methodologies, you can offer consulting/training. Some companies prefer in-house team training instead of full outsourcing. We provide internal training and consulting services—these have higher fees and better profit margins.
10. Why GEO Fits OPC (One Person Company) Perfectly
Looking back at 10 years of the internet, ideal projects for ordinary entrepreneurs share traits that GEO has:
-
Early industry stage with large information gap: more opportunities, less competition.
-
Relatively high unit price: service value is easier to demonstrate vs. pure tech development.
-
No large team needed: 1–2 people with internet & AI tools can do work that once needed 10+ people.
-
AI boosts efficiency: tech advances amplify individual capabilities.
-
Broad future market: demand grows with AI search development.
For ordinary people, OPC + GEO is a realistic, low-risk entrepreneurial path. It won’t make you a giant, but it will let you thrive.
This article isn’t urging everyone to start a business. Entrepreneurship isn’t easy—people have different situations, some prefer stability, others like challenges. I just want to share real experience to help you understand true startup costs.
Fear often comes from information asymmetry. Break problems down, and you’ll find things aren’t that complicated. Entrepreneurship doesn’t always need hundreds of thousands or a team. A computer, some experience, and execution are enough to start slowly.
It won’t be smooth sailing, but with the right direction, problems can be solved in practice. Remember: the hardest step is always the first one.
